Situated in the ambit of the studies about Brazilian political and social thought, and in dialogue with the sociology of culture and of intellectuals, this research has as a theme the intellectual performance of Antonio Candido, taken as an interpreter of Brazil by reason of the nature of his works and preoccupations. Attempting specially for the ideological dimension of his performance in the period delimitated, which was of turning inside the Brazilian leftist ideological spectrum, going from the Marxism-Leninism orthodox (expressed in political party terms in the Brazilian Communist Party) to a socialism with liberal-democrats and Christians elements hegemony (decentralized in many groups). Through a systematic reading of the works published by Candido in the period and also a bibliography and documental investigation about his public intervention and participation in political and cultural organizations in the historical moment of interest, this research aims at verifying the hypothesis that his non affiliation to the Brazilian Communist Party and his approximation with the progressive Catholicism that was arriving from France have an important significance to the comprehension of the whole Candido's intellectual performance, in the meaning of an engagement not only for the knowledge of Brazilian social reality, but also for the formation of a specific tradition of political and social thought in Brazil, capable to orientate the elaboration of a political project to the nation based in its standards.
