Abstract

The effects of environmental pollution in the short and long terms have been one of the biggest incentives for technological development in several industrial sectors. The implementation, by government agencies from many countries, of laws that regulates the emission of pollutants brought to the automotive industry a major challenge: to increase the efficiency of vehicles, reducing the impacts on the environment and ensuring customer satisfaction. This project aims to develop a prototype of a spark-ignition engine with variable compression ratio and displacement, being such parameters independently controlled. Modifying the piston stroke in order to regulate the power delivered by the engine raises the pressure in the intake manifold, decreasing the pumping work of the air/fuel mixture into the cylinder. If it is still necessary to reduce the load, the increase of the compression ratio compensates throttling losses and improves the efficiency of the mechanical assembly. The prototype will be made from the Volkswagen's AP engine with 1.8 L and four cylinders in line, seeing that some components will be reused, whereas others, modified or manufactured. (AU)
