Abstract

Despite the importance of the small ruminants to familiar farming and the potential of this production system for emerging markets, the infections caused by gastrointestinal nematodes are a huge health/economic problem. The intense use of anthelmintics led to the development of parasite resistance and a reliable method to monitor the resistance status is necessary, as occurs in other countries. Our goal is to develop a resistance diagnostic tool in vitro to anthelmintics groups available in Cuba and Brazil, by validating it at property level. The larval development test (LDT) will be adapted for 96 plate-wells to determine the lethal concentrations (LCs) for thiabendazole, levamisole, ivermectin and monepantel for both susceptible (McMaster) and resistant (Embrapa2010, Embrapa2016) isolates of Haemonchus contortus. After this step, the Faecal Egg Count Reduction Test (FECRT) will be held in herds of sheep, selected by the SARA software, to obtain the status of resistance to albendazole, levamisole, ivermectin/moxidectin and monepantel, calculated via RESO. The helminths eggs of the herds will be recovered in the laboratory and subjected to LDT. Its CLs will be compared with the results of susceptible and resistant isolates for each drug. A correlation between the LCs and FECRT results will be held. We will develop a simple, cheap, fast (7 days) and reliable test for future use in laboratory routine in Cuba and Brazil. He will promote a more rational/monitored parasite control in sheep/goats, slow the development of nematode resistance, preserve chemical classes and help to promote reversion to susceptibility.
