Abstract

This Research Project has the general objective to investigate limits and possibilities of Colin Howson (2000) Bayesian approach to the problem of induction. Bayesianism is an interpretation of probability calculus, which merit is to provide degrees of belief in a hypothesis given certain evidence. In turn, the problem of induction, as understood in the context of David Hume's work (1902, 1999), is seen as the search to justify inductive reasoning due to the impossibility of doing so, or through deductive reasoning once they are invalid, or by reasoning from experience, because of the circularity created when using arguments that take into account exactly what they want to justify. Howson, in particular, argues that induction is justified as long as, once appropriate assumptions are adopted, their inferences are consistent. To check the progress of the Bayesian approach, it will be compared to other solutions addressed to the problem of induction. We understand that the discussion held during the Research will enable the development of a critical evaluation of Howson's considerations. (AU)
