Abstract

The activated sludge process is one of the most used options in the treatment of sewage. Recently it was discovered that, when operating under the regime of sequential batch with reduced sedimentation time, the phenomenon of activated sludge granulation may occur. This fact results in positive properties as greater concentration and biological sludge sedimentation rate, which provides greater loading capacity. In addition, you can control the aeration so that the occurrence of anoxic conditions in the interior areas of the beads, being thus possible obtaining the nitrification and denitrification of sewage. Studies have shown that the growth of phosphor organisms accumulators is possible, providing also the system of removal capacity of this important pollutant present in sewage. (AU)
