Abstract This research project stems from a recurrent tendency found in Brazilian and Argentinean film production during the decade of 2000, comprised of the combination of Bazin's realism aesthetical elements with elements distinct to the horror film genre. We would like to suggest that this creative mixture of aesthetic processes, traditionally dissimilar, creates a sensory atmosphere of tensions (a fear atmosphere) that mimics psychological and subjective aspects of the consciousness of a particular historical time in Brazil and Argentina. It occurs mainly in films that, pertaining to that tendency, cover the subject of representing different social segments. Considering the discourse as historically relevant, this research project intents to differentiate and analyze film styles to comprehend the mechanisms of hybridization between realism and the horror cinema. The hybridization, as it will be inferred, is essential to make thrillers out of the feature films Neighboring Sounds (O Som ao Redor, Kleber Mendonça Filho, 2013) and History of Fear (Historia del Miedo, Benjamín Naishtat, 2014), highlighted as paragons of the tendency and composing elements of this research.
