Abstract

Malaria is one of the most important parasitoids worldwide, affecting approximately 300 million people each year. This is an acute feverish infectious disease transmitted by Anopheles genus vector, whose agents are the Plasmodium sp. Malaria has a conventional therapy, which is often hampered, because the patients do not undergo the medical treatment properly, thus favoring Plasmodium resistance. Considering the small quantity of innovative antimalarials medicine approved in the last decades, the pursuit of more effective and less toxic antimalarial drugs and the design of pharmaceutical systems based on microneedle arrays (MNs) could be considered as the main processes of fighting this disease. Thus, the aim of this work is the development of a transdermal patch to treat malaria, in order to increase the patient's adhesion to therapy and to help reduce mortality rates due to these parasitoids. Therefore MN will be developed since they are minimally invasive devices that painlessly by-pass the skin's stratum corneum, which is the principal barrier to topically-applied drugs. The arrays will be analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, dimension uniformity, tensile strength, percentage elongation and young's. After development and characterization, dissolution study and Franz cells measurements will be taken. The quantification by active compounds will be analyzed by HPLC/MS. (AU)
