Abstract

Quasicrystalline alloys exhibit interesting features to be used as coatings due to high hardness, low friction coefficient, low friction coefficient (that is, a material with non-stick property), high corrosion resistance in acid medium, high resistance to oxidation and low thermal conductivity. The petrol industry has major problems associated with corrosion, wear and formation of organic deposits in ducts during oil transport, which clearly impairs oil production. In this sense, quasicrystalline alloys possess excellent surface properties for coating protection of oil pipelines, which can decrease the adhesion of organic material on the pipe wall and promote tribological resistance. In this project it is proposed the study of quasicrystalline and intermetallic alloys and their quasicrystalline approximants that can be used in coatings of metallic pipes. The objective of the study is to assess several aluminum based alloys of the Al-Fe-Cu system, with the potential to form quasicrystalline phases, with the addition of a fourth element to improve the corrosion, thermal and tribological properties. The alloys will be produced by rapid solidification methods, such as melt-spinning, and will be characterized by transmission and scanning electron microscopy (TEM and SEM), X ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and corrosion tests.
