Abstract

This research analyzes the policies to the Indians of America, produced by Portuguese and Spanish Empires. The proposal is to study the measures of Spain and Portugal during the early two hundred years of the colonization of America. The simultaneous focus on the two Empires is due to the fact that many directions on indigenous people were originated in the Catholic Church as well were common to both kingdoms. Besides, numerous events and systems present in several parts of America influenced and determined both the indigenist policies of Portugal and Spain. This mutual determination must also be realized in the policies of the own indigenous people, whose actions and modes impacted and were influenced by the practices of the European invaders. (AU)
