Abstract

The motivation of this internship is learning about movement ecology analysis and ecological modeling focused on interindividual variation. The main goal includes developing models that couple individual specialization to movement. To achieve this purpose, we will use the frugivorous bat Sturnira lilium as a model species. We will analyze radiotelemetry data that are being collected at the Parque Estadual de Vassununga, Santa Rita do Passa Quatro - São Paulo State. The data are being collected by fixed dataloggers, allowing the tracking of many individuals at the same time. We will analyze data from 30 individuals collected by 40 datallogers distributed in the landscape for 14 nights. On the analyses, we will use turning angles and step-length distribution of the entire population and compare to each individual to determine the proportion of the total population distribution explained by within and between-individual variation, an analogy to the individual specialization index WIC/TNW. We will use randomization methods for estimating a significance value to test whether the variation found between individuals and the population is expected by chance. We are also going to test for the effects of resources and landscape variables, such as patch size and landscape connectivity, on the distribution of step lengths and turning angles. Understanding movement patterns and the individual specialization in movement will provide relevant information about how these animals perceive the landscape and will allow to predict how they might respond to landscape processes such as fragmentation.
