Abstract

This project examines aspects of everyday life of the poor black population in Sao Paulo between 1890 and 1940. I try to understand the immediate post-Abolition period and the first decades of the republican regime as a way to understand the black and poor socialization process in the city. I intend to build a "cartography" of the areas that these population occupied, to understand their experiences in the face of a city that, among the great populational and economic growth, modernized itself in contradiction to the customs and expectations of former slaves. To this end, I will utilizate documents that shows the process of specialization of urban space and the clash between urban modernization and everyday social practices. (AU)
