Abstract

The use of insect repellents is a key preventive measure for the transmission of diseases such as dengue, malaria and chikungunya. Although some repellents can be applied to the skin in the form of lotions, their use is restricted because they cannot be applied in babies, which are extremely vulnerable to diseases mentioned above. Encapsulation of these substances and their use in ink as repellents surge as a promising alternative to prolong the repellent effect through controlled release and protect indoors. The miniemulsion polymerization is a simple technique that allows the encapsulation of substances in polymeric nanocapsules. The release of the repellent substance into the air is closely related to the properties of the polymer forming the shell of the nanocapsule. This project aims to encapsulate repellent substances (such as DEET and Citronella oil) via miniemulsion polymerization method using different methacrylic monomers. Synthesis of nanocapsules will be conducted to assess the effectiveness of encapsulation repellents. The polymer is characterized by thermal analysis, microscopy and molar mass distribution. Release experiments are performed for polymers with different glass transition temperatures (Tg), to determine a composition of monomers suitable to the purpose. (AU)
