Assessment of the effects of cryotherapy over digital perfusion of horses

Abstract

Laminits is ranked among the leading causes of equine disability. Because of its great importance to the equine industry, it's one of the main research areas of equine medicine, in which its physiopathology and treatment have been extensively studied. To the past decade, cryotherapy has been among the main research areas concerning treatment options for this disease, despite the need for scientific evidence to sustain its efficacy and lack of consensus regarding its efficacy, even on human medicine. Therefore, the objective of this study is to assess the effects of cryotherapy over digital perfusion of horses. To that purpose, eight healthy adult horses, with no previous history of laminitis will used. Serial venography will be performed on the distal extremity of the right thoracic limb (non-treated). The local effects of cryotherapy will be assessed by spectral Doppler ultrasound and mean arterial pressure acquisition of the left thoracic limb (treated limb). Data will be recorded previously (baseline) and at 10-minute intervals in between evaluations following immersion of the left thoracic limb into a cooled solution (4ºC), for 60 minutes. After that, the referred limb will removed from the cooled solution and data will continue to be recorded until the evaluated parameters return to baseline values. (AU)
