Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study is to quantify 3-dimensional displacements of the dentition and the angular changes (torque and tipping) occurred during the maturation process in individuals with normal occlusion. The second aim of this study is to assess the inter and intrarater reproducibility of two methods of digital dental model registration. Methods: The sample will comprise dental models of White-Brazilians with normal occlusion collected at 13 years of age (T1), 18 years of age (T2) and during the sixth decade of life (T3). The upper and lower dental models will be digitalized, saved as .STL and assessed using the software SlicerCMF 3.1. After labeling tooth landmarks and calculating the centroid of each permanent tooth, the models will be registered (T2 on T1 and T3 on T2) using two different methods: the method of superimposition using a region of interest (ROI) and the method of superimposition of landmarks of interest (LOI). The interphase displacement of each tooth centroid will be calculated as well as the directional changes in the transversal (x axis), sagittal (y axis) and vertical (z axis) planes. Torque and tipping will also be evaluated at the three time points. Result analyses: Interphase changes of linear and angular measurements (torque and tipping) will be evaluated using ANOVA and Tukey tests (p<0.05). Intra and inter-rater agreement for the two registration methods (ROI versus LOI) will be evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), Bland-Altman analysis and relative error magnitude (REM).
