Abstract

Cardiopulmonary arrest (CPA) is characterized by the sudden interruption of the heartbeat, breathing movements and immediate loss of consciousness, leading to irreversible brain damage and death if appropriate measures to stabilize the patient are not taken immediately. Each year, over 200 thousand adults suffer CPA in hospital environment in the United States, while many of these events could be avoided by identifying the previous signs and execution of appropriate treatment. Therefore, the intention of this study is to identify the occurrence of alert signs and changes in vital signs in subjects who had CPA in hospital environment and correlate the presence of warning signs and changes in vital signs with the occurrence of CPA. This is a retrospective, analytical and quantitative approach study with analysis of 218 records of patients who suffered CPA at the Emergency Department of São Paulo Hospital. (AU)
