Abstract

Focusing on a bilingual approach, this study aimed to evaluate and analyze the process of language acquisition by deaf children. Basing on sociointeractionism and studies that deal with the education of the deaf, is a field of research that will investigate an Infantile Education class bilingual - Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) and Portuguese - with listeners and deaf children or just children deaf. This is a case study of a qualitative nature, having as data collection techniques: routine observations of a group of children registered in a field diary and interviews with the teacher(s) of the class coordinator and director of the institution. As a result, we expect a deeper understanding of the development of language and cognition in deaf children who have contact with sign language in the first years of life, knowing it thus means that can foster a healthy growth in terms of cognition and communication, the deaf children.
