Abstract

Records of the Earth's magnetic field strength in archaeological and volcanic materials provides insights about processes that have occurred in the Earth's core for the last millennia. Several techniques have been developed to recover the archeointensity recorded in these materials. This has resulted in a large dataset whose geographic location is nowadays strongly concentrated in the northern hemisphere (~ 96% of the data). In order to contribute with new archeointensity data for the southern hemisphere, this internship project plans to obtain intensity results from Amazonian ceramics dating for the last three millennia. Considering the uniqueness of this material, we will perform the measurements with the microwave method (exclusive to the University of Liverpool), which needs less material, and also tends to minimize sample alteration bias regarding classical double-heating techniques. The direct implication from this proposal is a description of the magnetic field intensity evolution in a region that is still devoid of any record (North Brazil). The new data will also allow a better understanding of the generation mechanisms of the Earth's magnetic field. (AU)
