Abstract

The concept of ecosystem services provides an integrative approach to gauge to what extent restoring ecosystem functions results in social benefits. The research aims at enhancing and testing a draft version of an ecosystems services-based procedure to evaluate land rehabilitation in mining. This procedure, named Ecosystem Service Approach to Rehabilitation- ESAR, was developed and tested in a large project (Juruti bauxite mine), located in Pará State. Considering the large experience of Australia in mine land rehabilitation, a review of practices will be conducted as a preparation for testing ESAR in a Western Australia's bauxite mine where rehabilitation has been implemented and monitored for decades. Mine monitoring data will be reviewed under the perspective of restoration of ecosystem services. After reviewing the current state of ESAR, a peer-review will be sought by inviting experts to participate in a questionnaire survey. (AU)
