Abstract

In this project, we are going to carry out a study about the short-stories published by the writer Dinorath do Valle, emphasizing on six short-stories of hers: four from the book O vestido Amarelo, published in 1976, and two from the book Idade da Cobra Lascada, published in 1982. The short-stories selected were: "Margarida no Castelo", "Té-logo-Francisco", "Marta", "Língua estrangeira", "Confirmação de Ogã" and "Os objetos". In the study of this corpus, we are going to prioritise the study of the female characters. Therefore, studying theories about gender and literature, investigating the constitution of the female characters before the social context represented in each short story of the writer. The criteria used to select the corpus were based on the link between the female characters of each short-story and the role they represented in the universe depicted there. Regarding the role that those characters represented, we can recognize two extremes: the woman submissive to the social expectations surrounding her, and the woman who will overthrow those moral values. Thus, we are going to analyze, in this project, how each female character is represented, oscilating, sometimes, between these two extremes. (AU)
