Abstract

Currently, cities comprise over half of the world population, which explains the growing concern over the quality of life and urban sustainability. Both quality of life and urban environmental quality are important issues for cities planning and decision making. For better understand the problems and find solutions, the concept of urban metabolism appears to analyze the flows of energy, resources and materials in the urban system. In this context, it is necessary to use new tools that support these studies, such as indicators. In this way, the overall objective of this project is to identify, to study, to select and to define sustainability indicators for the application at the planning context and environmental management of cities adopting the approach of urban metabolism, from the standpoint of environmental quality and the quality of urban life. This research is categorized as descriptive and compromises: the literature review on the subjects of the study; the survey indicators, which will be studied based on the defined criteria, using the Likert scale; and finally, the SWOT method will be applied to identify the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. The indicators will be select on the quality aspects of urban life, urban environmental quality and urban metabolism. This research will contribute to the consolidation of scientific knowledge in the field of urban sustainability indicators for urban planning and management and also disseminate the results to support new researches. Keywords: sustainability indicators; urban metabolism; urban planning; environmental management. (AU)
