Abstract

The mammary gland tumors (MGT) are common in non-castrated female dogs and in approximately 50% of cases; the malignant tumors show aggressive histological subtypes. Besides the high incidence, canine MGT are a comparative model to breast cancer in women and both species can benefit with comparative studies. In women, several studies had shown the importance of the COX-2 selective inhibitors use in tumor prevention and metastases control. In bitches, some studies have associated COX-2 expression in invasive and metastatic MGT. However, these studies COX-2 expression by immunohistochemistry. Therefore, these studies did not look at the identification of the mechanisms involved in the COX-2 overexpression with negative prognostic factors. Due to importance of MGT in female dogs, this research aims to evaluate the antitumor response of the COX-2 inhibitor Firocoxib in primary canine mammary gland carcinoma cells and its metastases.
