Abstract

Biochar is the solid material obtained from the carbonization of biomass, deliberately produced to be applied into soil. Biochar has been applied into soil to enhance soil carbon sequestration, contributing to mitigate climate change. However, little is known about the long-term effect of biochar application on soil carbon sequestration and greenhouse gases emissions, and how the environmental conditions and biochar application rate could influence this process. The objective of this study is to enhance our understating on the long-term effects of biochar on soil carbon sequestration and greenhouse gases emissions under different environmental conditions. To accomplish this objective a modelling approach will be used. Furthermore, to better understanding the impact of biochar on C and N cycling, 13C and 15N isotope analyses in gas samples obtained in the greenhouse experiment linked to this project will be carried on. This opportunity in the IMK-IFU institute (Germany) will be also used to enrich the quality of the manuscripts with the expertise of IMK-IFU researchers.
