Abstract

Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a degenerative and inflammatory joint disease. There may be relationship between quadriceps function, knee angle in the frontal plane, limitation of functional mobility and falls. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between variables of quadriceps neuromuscular performance, functional mobility and falls in individuals with KOA and verify that there is a relationship between the knee valgus angulation and quadriceps functions. METHODS: subjects: Healthy individuals with no history of changes related to chronic diseases in the lower limbs and individuals diagnosed with osteoarthritis tibiofemoral confirmed according to the American College of Rheumatology criteria. Procedures: initially, will be carried out assessment of functional mobility through the application of the test Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) and familiarization with the muscle strength test. On the second day, the measurement of isometric strength of knee extension will be realized, which will consist of 3 maximum voluntary isometric contractions for a period of 5 seconds, and the registration of the knee angulations in the frontal plane will be made by photogrammetry in orthostatic and supine position. The analysis of f angles will be realized at the software AutoCAD. Muscle torque data will be processed in specific routines of Matlab, the peak torque will be determined by the highest torque value obtained after the onset of muscle contraction and rate of torque development is calculated using the slope of the torque versus curve time in 50 samples windows until completing a total time of 200 ms. Statistical analysis: SPSS statistics 18.0® (SPSS), with a significance level of p <0.05. (AU)
