Abstract

Theages Walker, 1855 comprises eight species with a neotropical distribution, and is considered the only genus of Arctiinae with androconial organs on its abdomen's dorsal surface. These organs have a taxonomic importance that is acknowledged in many groups within Lepidoptera, yet the contributions with species of Arctiinae in the neotropical region are still lacking. The present work proposes a detailed morphological study of the androconial organs under a structural and histological perspective, targeting the likely recognition of diagnostic characters to species that are relevant to the taxonomical delimitation of the genus, what could also offer aid in the understanding of the evolution of the secondary sexual characters found in Arctiinae. This project also aims to review and comprehend phylogenetic relationships among species allocated in Theages through the study of morphological characteristics of adults, besides providing a better understanding of the geographical distribution of species and a more stable classification to Arctiinae representatives.
