Abstract

Nanoparticles are currently emerging as intriguing research objects in all fields of chemistry and their special properties are causes of concern because a significant portion will be eliminated in the environment. A key point of discussion is how nanoparticles will interact with other components in natural waters. In this project we will focus on the interaction of nanoparticles with metal ions in the presence of humic substances in environmental systems. The speciation of metal ions will be made using the principle commercially available silica nanoparticles (LUDOX - sols containing particles of specific sizes) and add aquatic humic substances (extracted from samples collected from tributaries the São Paulo coast) to the solution to simulate environmental systems and check the competition between complexing. The differentiation of free and complexed ions is made using an ultrafiltration system and quantitation by absorption atomic spectrometry with flame spraying and graphite furnace. (AU)
