Abstract

This research aims to verify to what extent the association between, on the one hand, the understanding of key processes and design techniques and fabrication exploring algorithmic thinking and parameterization and, on the other hand, the theoretical support of Complexity may give rise to technological innovation on the management of multiple elements present in the dynamics between form, material and environmental aspects within the design process in architecture, in order to surpass the understanding of the computational paradigm in architecture as a mere provider of graphic representation.Research will be conducted in three axes: 1. Study design processes in architecture mediated by computer technologies that exploit the algorithmic thinking and parameterization and investigate the support of the theory of complexity in such processes; 2. From selected examples, explore which and how the parametric computer programs are being used in the design and manufacture in order to enhance the design process in architecture; 3. Investigate, from case studies, what are the procedures, techniques and methodology used by national and international researchers whose research explores the technologies and theories related to this research and have significant results in the production of other ways to manage, design and manufacture architecture. This research is inserted in Nomads.usp Centre of Interactive Living Studies, at the Institute of Architecture and Urbanism, University of São Paulo, IAU-USP. Researches conducted at Nomads.usp have been investigating architectural design processes supported by the theory of complexity and mediated the information and communication technologies (ICT).KEYWORDS: design processes; algorithmic thinking, parameterization, procedures, techniques, method, Complexity theory.
