Abstract

The significant increase in the use of totally ceramic restorations instead of metaloceramics has been justified by the advances in CAD-CAM technology, esthetic potential and improved fracture resistance. Therefore, the development of monolithic zirconia, "high translucency", emerged as an alternative to the use of yttria-stabilized poly-crystalline tetragonal zirconia (Y-TZP) layered with veneering porcelain, due to the high clinical indexes of porcelain fracture or in the interface of these restorations. Due to the scarce knowledge regarding the behavior of monolithic zirconia exposed to a moist environment in a long term, this study proposes to investigate the wear suffered by this material after mechanical cycling process by sliding, with an emphasis on monolithic zirconia indicated for anterior region, since it presents different structural characteristics. In order to do this, cylindrical specimens of two zirconia suitable for the manufacture of monolithic dental prostheses (one for anterior region, another for posterior region) and porcelain veneer specific for zirconia shall be submitted to the mechanical cycling wear test. The wear will be evaluated by measurements of density, quantification by mass loss and analysis of the microstructure in scanning electron microscopy. In addition, Vickers hardness and apparent fracture toughness will be evaluated. (AU)
