Abstract

This research aims to study the visual representations of the war between the Dutch trading companies and the Iberian crowns in the first half of the seventeenth century, through the analysis of engravings, paintings and military reports. We intend to investigate the ways conflicts that happened in the Iberian conquests were represented. These conflicts occurred on the edge of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans - areas in which the two Dutch trading companies (VOC and WIC) operated. Also, we will investigate aspects related to the movement and consumption of these images, evaluating to what extent the production of prints and texts increased the public credibility of the companies. Considering the differences between the two companies from the point of view of their social roots in the United Provinces, this research aims to identify and contrast the visual 'speeches' produced by each one. We expect that the analysis of visual and textual documentation will allow us to better understand the elements of convergence and differentiation of the Dutch commercial expansionism in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans. After all, our main goal is to reconstitute the unity and diversity of the Dutch imperial culture with an emphasis on its visual dimension. (AU)
