Abstract

The aim of the present study is to assess the influence of observers on gloss acceptance of resin composites, with different illuminant exposures, under 60° or non-determined visualization fields. Six specimens presenting 6 mm in diameter and 1.5 mm thick will be fabricated and a bovine tooth specimen (1 mm dentin and 0.5 mm enamel) will be also obtained. Specimens will be polished to obtain surface gloss, in gloss units (GU), at 10GU, 25GU, 40GU, 55GU, 70GU or 85GU, while bovine tooth specimen will present 85GU. Thirty observers will be selected for the analyses (10 laypersons, 10 students and 10 dentists). The study will be submitted to the Institutional Review Board. Subjects will individually compare the surface gloss of resin specimens and bovine enamel sample in a light box (Gti - Newburgh, NJ). Specimens will be randomly placed, in the lightbox with light incidence set at 60°. All analyses will be performed under three illuminant conditions, being D65, incandescent light and fluorescent light. Observers will answer to specific questions to determine the acceptability limit of surface gloss variations. Fifty percent of observes will begin the analyses with determined visualization field at 60o, followed by non-determined visualization field. The rest 50% will perform observations in opposite order. Data will be submitted to General linear/non-linear model PROBIT and non-linear regression estimation PROBIT (5%). (AU)
