Abstract

Stereotypes are present in people's daily lives, direct measures of their influences on attitudes are difficult to realize since stereotypes are often implicitly expressed in the behavior of people who explicitly reject the same stereotype or even wish to camouflage it. The Implicit Association Test (IAT) has become a widely used instrument for measuring attitudes and prejudices in relation to particular groups. The IAT assesses implicit attitudes inducing people to quickly categorize stimulus words using two response keys. So, as IAT is a robust, widely used test, the aim of this study was to correlate melanin density and other characteristics such as schooling, income and self-attributed color of a population sample with "race" stereotypes and attribution of guilt, observing if unconsciously people tend to blame people according to their skin color (AU)
