Abstract

In the context of climate change challenges the provision and interdependence of water, energy and food services (urban nexus) for cities involve different actors in a process of governance and public policy formulation. This project seeks to understand how public policies can promote synergies between different sectors towards the urban nexus in metropolitan regions. The main hypothesis is that there are several alternatives in public policies, not necessarily associated at first sight with sustainability or climate change, which can create new possibilities for resilience. In this way we intend to investigate the cases of the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, from the municipalities of São Paulo and Guarulhos, and the Metropolitan Region of Rio de Janeiro, from Rio de Janeiro and São Gonçalo. The aim is to contribute to the identification of new possibilities for strategic actions and responses to scarcity and vulnerability in Brazilian metropolis, which are characterized by alternatives and synergies between the components of the nexus. Finally, this study aims to contribute to the Department of Environmental Health of the School of Public Health of USP, also to the Incline (Nucleus to support USP research on climate change) and, in addition, will be an integral part of the FAPESP Thematic Project Resilience And vulnerability at the urban Nexus of food, water, energy and the environment (ResNexus) - international cooperation (Brazil, Netherlands and United Kingdom) - coordinated by Prof. Leandro Giatti.
