Abstract

Mycoplasma suis is a bacterium belonging to the family Mycoplasmataceae and Class Mollicutes. They are epicellular parasites, which adhere to the surface of pig erythrocytes, generating deformations in the target cells. The disease caused by this parasite, porcine hemoplasmosis, can be characterized by asymptomatic cases or nonspecific clinical signs, such as fever, anemia, moderate jaundice, loss of appetite, loss of weight, increased feed conversion, reproductive problems (birth of weak piglets, stillbirths and infertility of animals), and death by severe hemolytic anemia. Since white-lipped peccaries belong to the same order of the domestic swine (Sus scrofa domesticus), a high phylogenetic relationship is observed between these groups of animals. The urbanization associated to the large distribution of peccaries in the Brazilian territory, except for the semi-arid region of the Caatinga biome, promoted a closer contact between domestic pigs and peccaries, facilitating the exchange of parasites between those animals. The objective of the present work is to investigate the occurrence of Mycoplasma suis in peccaries (Tayassu pecari) sampled in northeastern Brazil, using molecular methods. (AU)
