Abstract

The World Health Organization considers 80% of pregnancies a natural event of low risk, therefore it is unnecessary to resort to caesarean section if vaginal delivery does not offer any risk to the health of the mother and baby(s). The observed high and rising cesarean rates in Brazil brings the necessity to problematize the phenomenon and understand the real reasons why this type of childbirth almost always is indicated by health professionals and accepted by pregnant women. For this study, we assume that the lack of incentive to normal childbirth is a consequence of the social medicalization phenomenon. So, the main goal of the project is to investigate how the relationship between pregnant women and workers of UBSs happens in the city of Assis, SP, through interviews with five pregnant women by UBS and workers, which will focus on how pregnant women are treated and considered during their prenatal. We want to find out if these women has access to all of the information so they can choose their childbirth consciously and also if they receive a humanized care, which gives attention to their fears and concerns, preparing them for childbirth and for what comes next.
