Abstract

Macrocoeloma Miers, 1879 is a genus currently comprising 13 species endemic to the Americas with representatives found in both Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Recent phylogenetic analyses based on molecular data proposed that Macrocoeloma does not belong in the family Mithracidae and was regarded as incertae sedis within the superfamily Majoidea. The Brazilian coast is an important area of occurrence of this genus, in which eight of the known species inhabit the intertidal areas of rocks and coral reefs. The doubts about the systematics, primarily the relationship with other majoids, the possible monophyly of the genus, and the absence of a complete revision of the genus emphasize the necessity and are the main goals of this project. To achieve these goals we are going to combine traditional morphological analysis with next-generation DNA sequencing techniques to produce phylogenetic trees and use them as a basis for the taxonomic review of the genus.
