Abstract

The motif of the double is explored in the literature from the earliest written records. A way of explaining the dualities of human thought, it was present in many literary genres, from Latin comedy to the latest literary works. However, in Romanticism, particularly the German Romanticism, the motif of the double was portrayed, thought and developed more broadly, following the development of philosophical theories at that time by several authors of philosophy, aesthetics and literature. Among them, there is E. T. A. Hoffmann. He was the first, notably through his narratives, to develop key features of the double. He created variations and presented various forms of duplicity which later influenced a number of writers in Europe (Gautier and Baudelaire), Russia (Gogol and Dostoyevsky) and the Americas (Edgar Allan Poe and Machado de Assis). This Master's project, approved by the Graduation Program in Literary Theory and Comparative Literature, traces the theoretical discussion on the double and analyzes the occurrences of the double motif based on three selected short stories by E. T. A. Hoffmann ("The Adventures of New Year's Eve", of 1815; "The Stone Heart," of 1817; and "The doubles", of 1821), representing three phases of his work, accompanied by their translation yet unpublished in Brazil. This project also aims to present and discuss the basic features of the manifestation of the double as developed by this author in his narratives given the relevance and the influence that the double motif, mainly as developed by Hoffmann, exerted on several ulterior authors.
