Abstract

The aim of this project is to further the investigation already in course in the main project in Brazil, using the same methods, notably the gathering of tokens of subjunctival complementation of facio and uolo, its general distribution between juxtaposed and with-ut tokens, called here quantitative analysis, and then a qualitative analysis regarding morpho-syntactical context, register, and semantics. The main corpus will be broaden to not only Plautus (main research), but also Terence. This encompasses all linguistically relevant texts of Archaic Latin. The results from Terence will be compared to those from Plautus, providing general conclusions on Archaic Latin. After that, the same method will be applied to Cicero's Epistolae ad Atticum and the results will be compared to those of Archaic Latin. With this project, it will be able to provide both a synchronic analysis of this syntactic matter in Archaic Latin and also a diachronic analysis based on its comparison to some data from Classical Latin.
