Abstract

Engineering project are usually assisted by computer simulation to define its materials, dimensions and lifetime prediction. The thecnique becomes interesting in cases whose geometry and boundary conditions are complexes, in which information would not be obtained with the same precision and cost otherwise. However, the validity of results depends on the faithful representation of the physical problem, being necessary that input data is consistent with reality. In this Master project it is proposed to simulate the Wedge Splitting Test, commonly used for measuring refractories' fracture energy, using the Finite Element Methods (FEM). It will allow one to obtain more properties from a single mechanical test, aiding fracture analysis. The development of a representative numerical model of the test will be assessed, regarding its geometry, boundary conditions and material's mechanic behaviour. Validation will be done by comparison of loading curves, displacements obtained by Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and crack lengths measured from I-DIC (Integrated). It is expected to build up tools to allow and facilitate the FEM analysis of the cited mechanical test. Not only the coupled study of this test with DIC and FEM, but also properties such as Young's modulus, stress intensity factors, fracture stress, fracture energy and the crack growth resistance would be obtained from a single test.
