Abstract

A period of study and research abroad will be used to design a specific ESPIM-based healthcare application and evaluate it in a small scale field trial with elderly people. This will be done at Digital World Research Centre at the University of Surrey which is specialized in new media innovation. The project will be part of an assistive media for health and wellbeing research theme in the Centre, and a contribution to a new UK-Brazil SPRINT network on that topic. Pilot fieldwork and a literature review will be used to identify challenges for independent living in the older population. These will be used to inspire the design of a mobile application based on the ESPIM platform developed at the University of São Paulo. This will then be implemented in collaboration with the São Paulo supervisor and her team, for evaluation at Surrey. A field trial will then be carried out with a small number of older people living alone. The findings will be shared within the SPRINT network and written up for publication in a top tier journal.
