Abstract

High thermal and mechanical loads produced by cutting processes cause intense plastic deformation in the work material and therefore structural alterations in the surface and subsurface of machined parts. Such changes alter the material properties and, as a consequence, part lifetime. Thus, a correct evaluation of the influence of machining on surface integrity is especially important when the part is subjected to high loads. In milling process the loads generated by the tool vary during cutting and due to this, subsurface characteristics (intensity of deformation, occurrence of strain hardening, metallurgical alterations, etc.) are distinct in different regions. In this context and knowing that few researchers consider this in their analyses, the project proposes a characterization of the subsurface obtained in different regions and directions of the machined part. The work has the goal of determining a method for analyzing the subsurface considering the process kinematics. (AU)
