Abstract

Introduction: Among the various modified forms of low density lipoprotein (LDL), electronegative LDL [LDL (-)] is an endogenously modified subfraction that contributes to the atherosclerotic process, modulating the inflammatory response. Considering that the protein portion of LDL (ApoB-100) is targeted by autoantibodies, peptides derived from this antigen have been investigated for the development of a therapeutic strategy in atherosclerosis. LDL (-) mimotope peptides mimic the conformation of ApoB-100 epitopes exposed after changes in LDL that occur in the body, thus being candidates to be used in immunization for atheroprotectionRationale: Our group recently mapped two human LDL (-) mimotope peptides, termed p1A3 and p2C7, which represent conformational microdomains of ApoB-100 and modulate the inflammatory response of macrophages. Objective: To investigate the atopoprotective effect of p1A3 and p2C7 peptides through immunization in C57BL/6 LDLr -/- mice, in order to elucidate the immunomodulatory effect and contribute to the future development of a therapeutic strategy in atherosclerosis (AU)
