Abstract

A flow map presents a linear movement between two or more places. Due to the high number of vehicle on roads, the use of flow maps has increased even more. Among the advantages are economy end mobility. A few years ago it was difficult to represent traffic directed flow on road by using a representative number of linear symbols due to technical limitations. Recently, static and animated maps have been used by the industry to present traffic directed flow. However, researchers in the area of ergonomics and human factors affirm that animation should be used only to attract attention or to convey a process. The aim of this work is to design traffic directed flow maps, static and dynamic, and evaluate the performance of the cartographic communication in the context of map use. The following stages to accomplish this research work are: literature review; conception of graphic designs; preparation of documents to the experiment; recruitment of subjects; configuration of the test environment; test; data extraction and organization; analysis of the results. It is intended to identify if animation combined with static is superior to static symbols in the cartographic communication about traffic flow intensity and direction. (AU)
