Abstract

Many factors impact architecture and its quality, including the design process itself. To improvement design quality studies are necessary to understand this process and identify methods and tools to assist designers, especially in their cognitive processes. Design of the built environment is complex, influenced by social and technological changes that occur at an increased speed. New demands are posed on designs, ranging from environmental to technical, cost, security and social questions. Instruments, methods and tools to assist the design process are essential for a productive and quality process and they need updating. These tools are important at the various phases of the design process to assist cognition, stimulate creativity, deepen collaboration, organize information and increase productivity and management of these phases and to ensure the quality of the end product: the design, its construction and use. The literature presents a wide variety of design process support tools and methods, including games and strategies. However these are dispersed and as yet not widely explored in both professional and educational environments. This research project aims to identify such tools, games and dynamics through a systematic literature review on the architectural design process. Data will be categorized according to the tools' functions in the design process. Specific tools will be selected and applied in professional and teaching environments. Analysis of these applications will concentrate on the productivity of the design process as well as quality and quantity of issues raised to supports the cognitive processes of the architectural design process. Knowledge gained will be disseminated and should make the academic and professional communities more aware of the available support tools and their benefits to improve both design and design processes.
