Abstract

In the literature it is described that with age there is a decrease in muscle tone, including the muscles associated with swallowing, and the reduction of these forces ends up being offset by an increase in swallowing time in the elderly. In a previous study, it was revealed that grip strength is associated with the tongue of force, showing a relationship between physical exercise and the forces of the important muscles for swallowing. With this in mind, this study aims to verify the influence of exercise on swallowing, by measuring lip forces, tongue and cheeks, and tongue resistance with IOPI device (Iowa Oral Performance Instrument), timekeeping swallowing and number of sips of liquid cake (200 ml), comparing before and after exercise, directing to the changes that occur in healthy aging.
