Abstract

Effortful swallowing is one of the therapeutic techniques used in the oropharyngeal dysphagia rehabilitation. Some studies have observed that effortful swallow technique reduced parasympathetic and global components of the Heart Rate Variability (HRV) in Men and Women Healthy Between 18 to 35 years. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the effects of effortful swallowing technique on heart rate variability in individuals with dysphagia oropharyngeal neurogenic. Method: The study will be conducted in subjects with neurogenic oropharyngeal dysphagia, with different neurological diseases, young adults, adults and seniors, of both genders, attended at Specialized Service in the Diagnosis and Rehabilitation of Dysphagia Oropharyngeal Neurogenic. Process diagnosis of oropharyngeal dysphagia will be made through three procedures: 1) anamnesis; 2) clinical speech therapy evaluation of swallowing; 3) Nasoendoscopic evaluation or videofluoroscopic swallowing for dysphagia confirmation. The effortful swallowing technique will be applied only in individuals with dysphagia indication for this technique. The protocol will consist of two stages where the linear indices of HRV will be analyzed: 1) Spontaneous Swallowing and 2) Effortful Swallowing during 5 minutes on each protocol. (AU)
