Effect of autologous and homologous seminal plasma on seminal characteristics of frozen stallion semen

Abstract

In face of the satisfactory fertility it is widely known on reproduction of equine specie the use of cooled semen. In contrast, frozen semen has barriers to surpass since not all semen is resistant to stress caused by the process of freezing. Therefore, studies are conducted aiming the acquisition of a product of better quality, minimising the damaging effects that cryopreservation causes to spermatic cells. It has been demonstrated that the use of seminal plasma on freezing promoves the occurrence of those effects, reason why nowadays the compound is removed. In natural covering, however, the seminal plasma has a fundamental function for the maintanance of spermatozoa on female genital tract, spermatozoa capacitation, modulation of uterine inflammatory response and antioxidant action. In front of those characteristics the possibility of benefits associated to its use on cryopreservation is evaluate. This study aims to analyses de semen quality after the addition of 20 percent of seminal plasma before the cryopreservation process, comparing with the characteristics post-thaw of the same one without the addition of compound. Futhermore, will be analysed the effect of autologous and homologous seminal plasma added after the freezing, aiming to visualize the repercussion of different seminal plasma comparing the quality of semen before and after cryopreservation.
