Abstract

Materials applied at high temperatures and severe environments became a scientific and technologic requirement nowadays. Literature relates studies that have been done independent of commercial objectives to improve the development of new alloys and, to reevaluate the existent commercial alloys, through data acquisition in extreme conditions. The superalloys are a group of materials developed for applications that requires high mechanical and corrosion/oxidation resistance at high temperatures. Nowadays, Inconel 625 is the most utilized nickel-based superalloy applied in gas turbines, marine equipment and heat exchanger. The aim of this work is to evaluate and correlate the microstructure (through optical and electronic microscopy) and mechanical properties (through hardness tests) of Inconel 625 nickel-based superalloy in the as-cast state and after isothermal oxidation tests at different conditions of time and temperature. The thermodynamic simulations with JMatPro software (nickel database) will be performed in order to evaluate the phases and the oxidation mechanisms. The results will allow understanding the microstructural and mechanical changes that occurs in the Inconel 625 superalloy at different times and temperatures which the material is exposed during the oxidation tests.
