Abstract

The Ecological Risk Assessment (ERA) is an international method of calculating the probability of occurrence of adverse events in a given ecosystem, through the integration of physical, chemical and biological information, allowing the assessment of the risk to the degraded environment. The ERA method was proposed by the American Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) during the 1980s and was restructured by the same agency in 1992. Jensen and Mesman (2006) defined the ERA as a technique that calculates the likelihood of adverse ecological effects from collecting, organizing and analyzing environmental data. In this way it is possible to appreciate the action of stressors in the ecosystem and plan alternative management and remediation. The study area selected is the municipality of Bom Repouso, located in Minas Gerais, which is characterized as one of the largest strawberry and potato producers in Brazil. Both crops require the intensive use of agrochemicals and their cultivation in the municipality is considered a potential cause of environmental impacts, mainly due to the physical characteristics of the region, with high altitudes (1100-1700 m), intense precipitation and declivities, which increase the rate of runoff, potentializing the transportation of pesticides and fertilizers from the crop areas to the fountains and uncultivated areas. This scenario has been studied since 2000 by the work team of the Nucleus of Ecotoxicology and Applied Ecology (NEEA/EESC/USP). The results obtained and the implementation of new experimental arrangements proposed in this project will generate a set of information relevant to the application of ERA and consequently better management to use of pesticide in Brazilian scenarios.
