Abstract

This study examines the effects of working during higher education on academic performance using administrative data from FEA-USP. Strategies to identify the causal relationship between working and academic performance, using as an outcome measure grade points average and credits completed, include OLS regression, student-level fixed effects to control for permanent unobserved characteristics, and an instrumental variables approach, which takes advantage of unique institutional details of the work-study program to address for potential problems associated with endogeneity.
