Abstract

Nowadays, to increase productivity of crops it is necessary to increase the use of agricultural inputs, for example herbicides, which when applied in an unreasonable way will lead to some kind of contamination, through leaching and reach groundwater. It can be said that atrazine is an example of the most used herbicide in Brazil and in the world and is often detected as the main organic pollutant, revealing itself as a potential contaminant of groundwater. In this respect, it is necessary to know with more details the elements' dynamic through the soil, aiming a better control of risks of a possible environmental "pollution". Therefore, the main objective of this research is to simulate the atrazine dynamics using HYDRUS 2D model in tropical and temperate soils cultivated with maize. The research will be divided into two stages (Brazil and USA) that will be carried out the following: 1) obtaining the transport parameters of atrazine in soil by numerical adjustment with STANMOD model; 2) collection of physical-hidrolic soil, water and atrazine properties; 3) numerical simulation of solution distribution (water and atrazine) using HYDRUS 2D model during the development of maize. With the results, it is expected to collaborate with the atrazine application management improvement and to assist the development of agricultural sustainability. (AU)
