Abstract

Concerns over the global C cycle, greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) and their impacts on the global climate change have led researchers and public agencies to create policies aimed to mitigate the increasing concentration of GHGs in the atmosphere. In this sense, mangroves play a significant role in C sequestration and are characterized as the ecosystems responsible for the greatest C sequestration, especially in their soils. In this sense, the understanding of the biogeochemical processes involved in the C stocks recovery in these ecosystems is essential. This project aims to evaluate the restoration of pedogenetic process that rule C dynamic (e.g., paludization, sulfidization and gleyzation) in replanted mangrove soils, also evaluating the characteristics of the accumulated organic matter and the succession of the microbial communities involved in C dynamics. In the Guapimirim Environmental Protection Area (state of RJ), four sectors of mangrove forest with different replanting stage will be identified. In these sectors soil physical-chemical parameters will be evaluated; soil samples will be collected for biogeochemical and microbiological analysis, and gas sampled to quantify CO2 and CH4 emissions. The results of this project are expected to contribute to the dissemination of the mangroves as carbon sinks; to understand the dynamics of C in replanted mangroves; provide basis for funding policies to mangrove restoration projects, and help undergraduate and graduate students to conduct biogeochemistry studies in coastal wetlands soils.
